My South African Adventure Turned Food Safari
With a few days to spare before a Botswana educational trip, I decided to extend my journey and explore a couple of destinations in South Africa. My plan was simple: experience a bit of safari and unwind in the Cape Winelands. What I didn’t expect was that this trip would turn into an unforgettable food safari as well.

Into the Wild: Kwandwe Private Game Reserve
My adventure began at Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, tucked away in South Africa’s Eastern Cape—a true hidden gem known for its exceptional conservation efforts and remarkable wildlife. Spanning an impressive 30,000 hectares (74,000 acres) along the winding Great Fish River, the reserve feels vast, untouched, and incredibly wild.
From the very first game drive, the wildlife delivered beyond expectations. We encountered leopard, lion, cheetah, rhino (and plenty of them!), elephants, giraffe, and zebra—a spectacular lineup that seemed almost too good to be true. What makes Kwandwe particularly special is its scale and low-density model; with just 26 rooms across two lodges and five private villas, the reserve offers one of the highest land-to-guest ratios in South Africa. It never feels like a crowded reserve—instead, it feels like your own private safari playground.

While the wildlife was breathtaking, the culinary experience was equally memorable. Each meal was thoughtfully prepared using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients—fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and proteins that highlighted the region’s natural bounty. Lunches and dinners were paired with exceptional South African wines, and the bar featured a curated selection of locally crafted Cape Town gins. It was clear that the philosophy here extended beyond conservation—it celebrated a full sensory experience.

From Safari to the Vineyards: Franschhoek & the Cape Winelands
After my time in the bush, I flew to Cape Town and continued on to the Cape Winelands, basing myself in the charming town of Franschhoek at La Clé. Known as South Africa’s culinary capital, Franschhoek immediately set the tone for the next chapter of my journey.
After a relaxed afternoon exploring the town, I returned to La Clé for dinner—completely unaware of what awaited me. What unfolded was a family-style, multi-course feast, beautifully prepared and paired with their own wines. It was warm, generous, and indulgent—an experience that felt as much about hospitality as it did about food.

The next day, I ventured out to Boschendal Wine Farm, one of the region’s most historic estates. I toured their organic gardens—where much of their produce is grown—before enjoying a leisurely wine tasting and lunch surrounded by vineyards and mountain views. It was a perfect blend of sustainability, flavor, and scenery.

For my final evening, I walked into town for dinner at Épice, a restaurant celebrated for its imaginative cuisine. Their signature “Spice Journey” was nothing short of extraordinary—a 3.5-hour, 9-course tasting experience, each dish inspired by global spice routes and paired with carefully selected wines. Every course told a story, building on layers of flavor and creativity. By the end, I was both amazed—and incredibly full.

Thankfully, the walk back to my lodge offered a small but necessary opportunity to work off at least a fraction of the evening’s indulgence.
A Journey of Wildlife and Flavor
What began as a simple add-on to a Botswana trip turned into something far richer. South Africa delivered not only in terms of wildlife and landscapes, but also through its vibrant and diverse culinary scene.
From the bush to the vineyards, this journey became a celebration of place—where conservation meets cuisine, and every experience, whether on a game drive or at the dinner table, leaves a lasting impression.
